NEW UNITY 11110 STRUT ASSEMBLY FRONT-EITHER SIDE (REPL. MONROE 171672) Review

In early March of 2013, I purchased 2 of these hoping to replace the front struts on my wife's 2005 Chevy Malibu LS as they have been in bad shape for some time. As of this writing, Amazon.com continues to indicate that these are fully compatible with said vehicle. We received them in a timely fashion and sent them on there way to the mechanic along with the vehicle. Within a few hours of receiving the vehicle, our mechanic contacted us to advise us that these were not the correct struts for her vehicle. This resulted in us paying the mechanic for time spent working on the vehicle only to determine that we brought the wrong parts for the job.

Although the seller offered us a full refund for the products, we were faced with the burden of an $80 bill from the mechanic and a $35 bill from the USPS, the shipper we chose to return the package. All in all, I'm sure this product works great for it's intended purpose when being used with the correct vehicle(s). Buyer beware; although Amazon may indicate that this product is compatible with your vehicle, you should take an extra second to do your due diligence as you may be stuck with a hefty bill should you buy the incorrect part.

You're absolutely right Adam. They should remove the 2004 and 2005 model years under Malibu as it was no longer called the Malibu for these model years; they should add an entry for the "Chevrolet Classic" instead with the those model years listed under that name. This was the name given to the vehicle for these model years to prevent confusion as they were being produced side-by-side with the new model Malibu which began production in 2004. Interestingly, the "Chevrolet Classic" was only available for sale to businesses and not the general public. (Wikipedia, [...])

Final Assessment:

This part is NOT compatible with the 2004 or 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. It IS however, compatible with the 2004 and 2005 Chevrolet Classic; the 2004-2005 Chevrolet Classic is the equivalent of a 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu. This is a great example of poor marketing by Chevrolet and improper research by Amazon, or whoever provides the automobile match information. Needless to say, I brought my business elsewhere as I did not have the time to place an order with the risk of ordering the incorrect part again.
