Troy Lee Designs EG 5550 Adult Elbow/Forearm Guard MX/Off-Road/Dirt Bike Motorcycle Body Armor - Small Review
After a recent spill where I ended up in the ER with some stitches I had this crazy thought - maybe padding might be a good idea! After reading a lot of reviews on Amazon, JensonUSA.com, and BackCountry.com, I decided to go with the TLD EG 5550 elbow/forearm guards and the KG 5450 knee/shin guard.
In short, the EG 5550 is an excellent choice. I'm 5'7 / 155lbs, and went with the medium size. Using TLD's measurement charts, medium is the size they recommend and it's a perfect fit.
Key benefits:
- Lightweight
- Very breathable
- You honestly forget you're wearing them
- They will not slip
The only con for these is that because there are no adjustable straps, the measurement needs to be spot on. Likewise, you'll have difficulty in cold weather trying to slip a thermal base layer sleeve underneath these.
On the knee/shin guard side of things, I went with extra small (according to the sizing chart - that's what matched), and it was a snug fit. However I felt it slid down when I pedaled so I ended up returning them. There are a lot of great reviews for the KG 5450 so I wouldn't count it out on my part, but again with no straps it needs to be a dead perfect fit.
Although protection is the top priority when it comes to protective armor, comfort is up there too, and the material that TLD uses is excellent. Because if you're going to be wearing pads for hours in hot weather, you're going to want something that isn't going to drive you crazy with discomfort.
