Motocomm Magnum F14 Full-Face Communicator Headset - MC-551/-- Review
I purchased this headset to put into my Son's helmet for a long ride so we could keep in touch using GMRS radios.
I purchased the version with a 3.5mm and 2.5mm plug for the radio. It works with my Motorola and Midland radios, and with my Radioshack handheld CB. (Note that some Motorola radios take a single LONG 2.5mm plug. I don't know if the other version of this headset works with them)
I have put Autocom headsets in most of my other helmets so I know what a good headset feels and sounds like. This isn't quite the same quality as Autocom, but it's pretty close. The wires are long enough to wire up about any headset out there. The mic isn't on a fixed boom, so I don't know what you would do for an open faced helmet. My son's helmet is a modular (looks like a full face, but the front lifts up). I found a spot about midway up on the side to bring the wire out, then velcroed the Mic onto the movable front of the helmet. You can see the wire dangling there as you ride but it's not annoying.
I put the push to talk button on the bottom of the left side handlebar grip. I set it as far and tight inboard as I could and velcroed it there. It left it in a perfect position that you can press it with your left thumb if you have the clutch in, or with the index finger or thumb depending on how you normally grip. Very easy to use.
I also purchased a music mixer to go with this headset. MAGNUM CABLE MXR-1 MUSIC MIXER MXR-1
The mixer allows you to hook an MP3 player (or anything with a standard stereo sub-mini connector) into the headset. There is a button on the mixer that mutes the music and puts the radio to both ears, or allows music and puts the radio to one ear. My son claims he can't hear the radio at all with the music on, but I could. So I just point to my helmet when I want to talk to him and he mutes the music, keys the radio and says "what now dad?".
The whole setup is allot of wires, and some of the wires are very long. I wrapped up all the wires and zip tied them to the handle bar with the mute button facing up. It's a bit unsightly but they had to give enough wire to fit on any bike.
I think the price is about right considering the quality. I have an in ear headset with a throat mic, but the wind was too loud while riding. The mic in the helmet is very clear, even at highway speeds. And with the mixer you can talk on the radio AND hear music. You won't find that combo without paying allot of money.
